Life works in mysterious ways and God Winks occur at a moment’s notice, and I experienced one in July 2025. With an overwhelming feeling deep in my soul, I searched for new employment on WINEJOBS.com. I came across an opportunity that suited me to a perfect “T!”

I applied, was invited to interview, so I purchased a one-way ticket to Northern Texas, and I have never looked back. As the program Director for Enology, Viticulture, and Distillation at Grayson College, I also oversee an on-site vineyard planted with T. V. Munson grape varietals.

Viticulture is quite different in Texas than in California. To start, the harvest is much earlier and begins in mid-summer, creating a short growing season. Varietals are the same, yet different. There is a lot of comparison of the Vitis Vinifera, American, and European root stocks. Wild Mustang grapes grow straight up and overlook the valley. Not all, but a majority of Texans prefer wine like their tea, sweet. The grape industry history goes back to the 1600s to the Mission era. The first winery built and still in operation, Val Verde survived Texas state law and the long years of prohibition.
