The History of the Martini and California Wines
California is known for blue skies, ocean breezes, and sand between your toes. But California is also known for a few things that might surprise you—for example, the Martini. It originated in a small mining town in the Sierra Foothills, where one man found gold. The lucky miner headed to a local tavern to celebrate only to find out the bartender was fresh out of Champagne. The bartender got creative and used a few ingredients to create something similar for the lucky gold miner and called it the Martinez, which later became better known as the Martini.
Episode #54 Fall Wines & Made in California
Provisions and Libations: Fall Wines & Made in California is a 2 part series. This episode is fun and full of fun facts related to food and drink. Listen below.
Fall Wines
September is officially California’s Wine Month in honor of harvest. When creating a fall style meal using fall spices like cardamom, cinnamon or nutmeg our wine selection changes to complement the meal. During the Fall season we often choose a lighter body red wine and a heavier bodied white wine more than any other time of the year. Listen along as I explore the best varietals to replicate this notion and to pour at your next holiday party with a focus on textured wines.
Made in California
What does it mean when we say, “made in California?” Is it a question or a statement? And if it is either what ingredients do we use to classify a food item to be made in California? I have a quick answer! Foods made with avocado, fish of all kinds, bbq, garlic, strawberries and salads help make Californias cuisine so iconic. Two California Wines that would pair nicely with any meal using the above listed items are SAUCELITO CANYON Zinfandel and Alapay Reserve G.S.M. Blend. Both wines are medium body, dry and full of flavor. Perfect for a fall dinner or lunch on patio on a sunny day.
