Let Them Eat Cake

“Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” is a phrase coined by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1765 regarding the peasants and her gross misunderstanding of their plight with the famine. Brioche is a type of bread which cake resembled in the 15th century. In the 17th century, cake began to take a new approach and resemble the more modern version with a lighter texture and more sugar for added sweetness.

Birthday Cake

As we celebrate milestones and celebrations in life, we often eat cake, cupcakes, or a sweet dessert of some kind. For birthdays, eating a slice of your favorite cake is pretty standard in honor of turning another year older. The big question remains: What is your favorite kind of cake? Or do you prefer pie? I have been told there are two types of people … those who eat cake and those who eat pie. I, for one, love them both but prefer cake for my birthday. I also prefer chocolate or spice cake with a coconut cream topping or French vanilla. It’s all about the Cardamom flavors for me: mocha, spice, and chocolate nuances are my favorite flavors. I polled my Facebook friends to see how birthday desserts ranked in their opinions. Here are the statistics:

Cake was the winner, with 17 votes of varying types. There were five votes for pie and a few rogue voters for ice cream and Creme Brulee. Cheesecake and Strawberry Shortcake were the lead contenders for the cake division, and Lemon Meringue Pie was the leader in votes for the pies.

Let Them Eat Cake, Episode #33

Today’s episode is in honor of my dad’s birthday! Happy Birthday, dad! I Love you!!

Michelle Curtin shared her secrets of success when baking cakes for the special people in her life. Everything is homemade, and the decoration is created with love from her garden. She has created her own recipe and has committed it to memory, as there was not a recipe book on the counter as we recorded the podcast. She was baking from her heart with love.

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

With a silver spoon nonetheless. What does this really mean? It means you want it all, the best of everything, no sacrificing, as the British say, “to have or enjoy the good parts of something without having or dealing with the bad parts!” That sounds pretty darn good to me! Live a little, live a lot!!

I will leave you with one of Michelle’s masterpieces!
