Biblically Speaking
‘Eat, Drink and Be Merry‘ is a fun play on words that encompasses a positive attitude with a festive vibe, or so I thought when I chose the title for my latest business. I knew a little about the famous quote, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die,” from the Bible, but I never equated it to the phrase, “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry!” As I searched my business on Google to see how it appears from an SEO point of view, I came across dozens of biblical references that correlate with the phrase with different meanings of the phrase.
- Luke 12:19 – And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.
- Ecclesiastes 8:15 – And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.
- 1 Corinthians 15:32 – What do I gain, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
- Isaiah 22:13 – And behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
- Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 – I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil – this is God’s gift to man.
- Ephesians 5:18 – And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with Spirit.
- Luke 5:33 – And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.”
- Matthew 27:34 – They offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.
And so on and so on, there were 100’s more to read, but you get the point.
There are so many thoughts and ideas that float through your mind as you begin a new business. Who, what, why, when, and where are all part of the equation for creating the new business concept. Because my business caters to the food and beverage industry, it is fitting to use catchy fun phrases like Eat, Drink, and Be Merry. I never thought about the ramification of the exact phrase coming from the Bible with so many different pretenses and how people would react to it. So far, I have had a lot of fun with the title. My industry is a fun industry to belong to as we spend our day imbibing on the fruits of our labors or the labor of others who share it with us. My day consists of wineries, breweries, distilleries, and food beyond measure. How could one go wrong with that? So with that, I leave you with, “Eat, Drink and Be Merry!” and all that entails.
